After many years of struggling with addiction, I finally decided to get clean and sober. Because I was drinking heavily, using opiates and had chronic pain, a detox was necessary. I was nervous, to say the least. You hear all kinds of stories about people kicking, and how the pain is too much and they have to go back to using. Or you hear about seizures when withdrawing from alcohol. But I knew I couldn’t live like that anymore.
My family was suffering, I was suffering, and even when my pain was under control, the whiplash effect shortly after using was like riding a horrible roller coaster where you are having fun almost never and usually you are just sick and in agony. The doctors and clinicians medically detoxed me which made it possible to sleep and the pain was surprisingly manageable. They let me smoke as many cigarettes outside as I needed to (I’ve since quit smoking too, but one thing at a time!). The house is super comfortable, with a big TV, comfy beds, and great food. The techs and doctors were all really kind and cared about how I was doing. That was well over a year ago and I’ve been clean and sober since. Getting a foundation in recovery was really important for me. I don’t know if I could have done it without a medical detox. -Anonymous
